The Deep Submergence Research Vehicle (DSRV) ALVIN, owned and funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), performed a number of scientific and engineering tasks during the operating period, June-October 1967. Improvements were made in the submersible, its catamaran support ship, tools for doing useful work, and underwater navigation. Several unusual events are described such as: an attack by a swordfish; the observation and collection of samples in the deep scattering layer; discovery of a World War II airplane, and the loss and recovery of the mechanical arm.
