Modern and efficient ships like ro-ro vessels and ferries require economical hull forms, accommodating large above-water volumes and deck space. Also more advanced loading gear adds to the space requirements, specially at the bow and stern of the ship. This has started a development towards extremely V-formed forebody forms with very pronounced flare and, likewise, beamy afterbodies with broad transom sterns. Simultaneously with the development towards more extreme hull forms there is an increasing risk of a change for the worse regarding fuel economy, maneuvering and seakeeping qualities, propeller cavitation and vibration, etc. A great deal of today's efforts in theoretical as well as experimental ship hydrodynamics aim at solving these problems. The present paper deals with the question of how to foresee problems of the kind mentioned and of how to judge the importance of properly selected hull main dimensions, form, fullness and propeller arrangement.
