The design and operation of a research facility for studying the characteristics of cavitation flow are discussed. Drawings of the facility and the test areas are provided. The nature and effects of cavitation flow are described. Photographs of cavitation flow occurrences are included. The detrimental effects of cavitation are defined as: (1) reduction in propeller efficiency, (2) material erosion, (3) vibration and noise, and (4) steering difficulties for torpedoes. (Author)
