A unique training program for Bus Maintainer has been successfully completed. A three-year demonstration project was made possible by a grant from The United States Department of Transportation Urban Mass Transportation Administration. This project grew out of a two-fold need to provide career advancement opportunities for entry-level workers and to supply trained Bus Maintainers for the New York City Transit Authority. A needs assessment was developed in cooperation with The Director of Technical Training for the New York City Transit Authority. The primary purpose of the program was to provide basic education and maintenance skills to prepare Bus Maintainers' Helpers for promotion to Bus Maintainer. The Upgrade Training Program enabled Helpers in maintenance to establish the competency and eligibility necessary to achieve upward job mobility within the system.
