The purpose of this project has been to acquire a better knowledge about costs and efficiency in Norwegian ports. The method has been to compare costs in different ports, and supplement this comparison with in-depth interviews. There are significant cost differences between different kinds of goods. From 2/3 to 3/4 of the cargo-dependent costs are paid by the transport purchaser. Eastern Norwegian ports have considerably lower cargo-dependent costs that ports in Western Norway in particular because of the traffic pattern on the west coast. The 'main ports' have higher cargo-dependent costs than the other ports. (Copyright (c) 1997 Transportation Institute.)
