Extensive testing and evaluation requirements in the qualification of AlLi alloys for damage tolerant aerospace structures is addressed. Emphasis is on fracture and fatigue crack properties of two candidate sheet alloys, 2091 and 8090, compared with the conventional and widely used 2024 alloy. The relative merits of these materials are assessed, problem areas are indicated, and a survey is made of the type of qualification program necessary for damage tolerant AlLi aerospace structures.
