In order to obtain a more complete picture of the advantages and disadvantages of salting, the Swedish National Road Administration started a project in winter 1979/80 which sought to determine the consequences of discontinuing chemical deicing (salting). Extensive studies were of road conditions and friction, drivers' speed adaptation, accessibility of heavy vehicles, corrosion, dirt spray and drivers' attitudes to road maintenance and deicing.
