The involvement of USS Sampson (DDG-1O), in Desert Storm actually began much earlier than most people realize. The deployment of USS Saratoga (CV-60) and USS Wisconsin (BB-64) on 7 August 1990, was a long-standing, well-planned, and routine deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Early in the planning process, the deployment began to take shape as one which would center on the Battleship Battle Group (BBBG) concept, given the availability of Wisconsin.Such operations tend to focus on at-sea maneuvering and training of surface warfare personnel, due to the absence of the requirement to conduct those flight operations specific to an aircraft carrier.
