This report contains the phase I findings of a study to select and test devices for preventing lack of alertness in haulage truck drivers. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting surface metal and nonmetal mines, interviewing drivers and safety personnel, and reviewing accident reports. A number of devices for detecting a lack of alertness were considered and three were recommended for testing in actual operation.
