The design of a starmapper, an optical-electronic instrument with an array of photosensitive slits which are strapped to the spinning spacecraft is described. Recorded times of the passage of known stars over the slits, together with mathematical models of the spacecraft dynamics and starmapper instrument provide the basis for recursive estimation of the spacecraft attitude. The models are described and the attitude estimation approach is discussed.
