The main thrust chamber and nozzle are highly recognized components of a rocket engine. When one thinks of a rocket engine, the first item that comes to mind is typically the exhaust plume leaving the main thrust chamber and nozzle of the rocket. The main thrust chamber and nozzle serve the critical purpose of converting the chemical energy stored in the propellants into the kinetic energy required to generate the thrust necessary to lift a vehicle into orbit. Conceptually, this can be broadly divided into two steps. First, in the main thrust chamber, the rocket fuel and oxidizer react, converting the chemical energy into high temperature and high pressure gases formed as products of the reaction between the propellants. In the second step, these high pressure and high temperature combustion gases are expanded through a throat section converting the pressure and temperature into velocity. The flow at the throat is choked thermodynamically, reaching sonic velocity. The combustion gases continue to expand at supersonic velocities through the diverging section of the nozzle. As a result, the internal energy is exchanged for kinetic energy, generating the momentum force.
