The problems encountered during the design of the Tu 144 are considered. The cruising speed was limited to a range from 2300 to 2500 km/hr in order to avoid the great expenses inherent in the development of an aircraft based entirely on titanium alloys. The selection of the jet engine type is discussed together with great expenses inherent in the development of an aircraft based entirely on titanium alloys. The selection of the jet engine type is discussed together with the aerodynamic characteristics, stabilization and control, the aerodynamic design of the propulsion system, the wing structure, the landing gear, and the operation of the aircraft.
