This Canadian report presents an historical review of the work of the Structures and Materials Laboratory of NAE in the area of full scale testing of large aircraft structures. It covers the period from 1941 to 1984, starting with a static strength test of a moulded wood Anson fuselage and finishing with a fatigue test of a Grumman Tracker wing. Brief details of the loading arrangements and test results are included for each test component and these are used to trace the development of the laboratory from the use of rulers and and shot bags to computer-controlled servo-hydraulic actuators.
