In the autumn of 1972 an investigation was initiated at the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden, to find out why the measuring trailer BV:11, under certain meteorological conditions and for runways contaminated with ice, snow, slush or water, indicates better braking action than that pilots experience on landing. This report is a summary of results obtained up to the spring of 1975. The work is expected to be finished by the beginning of 1977. The measuring equipment itself is also described. The present report is partly a comparison between experimental results obtained with the measuring trailer BV:11 and with landing aircraft and partly an analysis of airline pilots reported observations of braking conditions when landing and braking on contaminated runways.
