The research program described in the report was carried out to investigate traffic movement through urban intersections. These efforts were directed at determining the factors that affect the safety and efficiency of traffic in the intersection situation. Some of the factors analyzed were intersection control, vehicle characteristics, and driver characteristics. The formulation of a computer simulation model was the central effort of this project. The model focuses upon the driver's perceptual, decision making and response processes as the crucial factors, but it also takes into account vehicle characteristics and environmental conditions. The experimental work included specific laboratory and full-scale studies as well as observational studies of real-world traffic. (Author)
