The use of flywheels based on satellite reaction wheel technology to store energy for public transport buses in urban areas is proposed. A 15.5 t bus with a 350 kg flywheel linked to a generator delivering (or receiving) 250 KW peak power in the range 4800 to 13000 rpm gives traction energy between 0.7 and 2 KWhr/km. A 90 cm external diameter, 70 cm high flywheel turning under pressure in a helium filled mounting gives 3 to 8 km autonomous operation, eliminating the need for continuous overhead cables.
