An examination of the ducted propeller field was conducted in order to present a simple and concise summary of its applications and developmental status. The study shows that for a given horsepower and propeller diameter, the ducted propeller has a 60 per cent static thrust advantage. Empirically, the ratio of plain to ducted propeller diameter to yield the same static thrust at a given horsepower is 2.0. It is concluded that the low horsepower, light airplane, should utilize the plain propeller whereas the ducted propeller is best suited for the higher horsepower, heavier airplane. The study indicates that the lack of experimental information on the ducted propeller is detrimental to its application development. Several illustrations are included to demonstrate possible applications. (Author)
