As North Carolinas population continues rising and highway and air traffic continue growing, development of rail transportation becomes increasingly important as an alternative to auto and air transport for both freight and passengers. It is North Carolina Department of Transportation policy to actively support development of freight and passenger railroads and to use state funds to leverage federal and private dollars to help meet our states economic development and transportation goals.
