Studies of 67 battle casualties confirmed the occurrence of a hyperglycemic response to trauma. The magnitude of hyperglycemia was related to the severity of injury and correlated with serum lactate levels, but not with arterial pH or PO2. Though of less magnitude, this response was sustained into the postoperative period. The significance of this metabolic response to trauma is discussed. (Author)
