African armies have reached a watershed in their transition from the internal security-oriented forces of their colonial origins, to become national armed forces with serious defense responsibilities. African forces are growing in size, sophistication and combat capability that is important in African context. Their capability for waging war is improving, and they will have a significant impact on the frequency, scope and character of African conflicts of the future.
