Recently the Delft University of Technology has reported experiments to investigate the influence of different keel forms on the performance of a sailing yacht. The series of keels investigated consisted of a 'plain' deep draft IOR type keel, a shallow draft keel, a keel center board combination, a Scheel keel, an elliptical keel and two keels with winglets. The results of these tests have been reported in Seahorse. Recently the project has been extended with a series of tests in waves with the 'plain' deep draft keel and the two winglet keels. The purpose of these tests has been to investigate the influence of winglets on the vertical motions (heave and pitch) of the yacht in waves and the extra added resistance in waves, the winglets are expected to produce.
