At Saguaro National Park, the National Park Service proposes to rehabilitate the 8.4-mile Cactus Forest Drive along Route 500 and Route 100. This action is needed to improve deteriorating road edges and lateral cracking in the roadbed, primarily as a result of drainage control problems. This environmental assessment examines in detail two alternatives: no action and the National Park Service preferred alternative. The preferred alternative includes the repaving of the existing roadway along Route 500 and Route 100; reconfiguring turnouts and the Javelina picnic area; improving road shoulders; establishing bicycle lanes on Route 500; improving roadside drainage; replacing two concrete box culverts; and improving drainage around stone walls constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
