The 1972-1973 navigation season on the Great Lakes opened April 1, l972. Full weather (NOAA, NWS) service aids were provided for shipping firms until early February 1973. A total of 329 gale warnings were issued for the calendar year 1972. Details are given on ice conditions. 32 vessels participated in the Great Lakes weather reporting program. During 1972 gale-force or greater winds were reported on 90 days in the Great Lakes. January was the stormiest month of the year for shipping. Shipping on the Great Lakes did not have to worry about low lake levels restricting a vessel's draft and the resulting loss of cargo capacity. Weather happenings are given for each month.
