The Traffic Safety CD-ROM: 1996 is a compilation of 20 years ( 1975-1994) of Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) data and 7 (1988-1994) years of General Estimates System (GES) data. It also contains summary information on traffic safety in the form of Traffic Safety Facts 1994 and 12 topical Traffic Safety Fact Sheets from 1994. The FARS data provide a census of fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States and contain detailed information on crash, vehicle, driver, occupant, and non-occupant characteristics. In addition, data are provided for the period 1982-1994 for the FARS blood alcohol concentration (BAC) distribution files. The GES data provide general information on a probability sample of all severities of police-reported traffic crashes in the United States. Data for both the FARS and GES data sets are provided in ASCII format on this disc along with their associated documentation files. In addition, this disc contains the FARS Analytic Guide: 1975-1994 that describes the changes in the FARS variables and their compatibility over the 20-year history of FARS data collection. With the FOLIO&no. 153; viewer software provided on the disc, data users can view and print out the FARS and GES coding manuals, the FARS Analytic Guide, Traffic Safety Facts 1994, and 12 Traffic Safety Fact Sheets. Accessing the actual FARS and GES data requires spreadsheet, database, or statistical application software.
