A substantial proportion of a typical trawlers fishing trip is spent actually towing the fishing gear. During this time the resistance of the vessel is insignificant compared to the resistance of the gear and this gear resistance therefore has a large effect upon the vessels overall fuel economy. It is the purpose of this report to provide gear component drag information for a range of typical Scandinavian trawls, to evaluate how these drags can be reduced by the rerigging of the gear or the use of alternative commercially available products and to suggest areas of future research and development.
