Impact testing was conducted to determine potential fire or other hazards resulting from rupture of fuel circuitry and/or tank retention failure in compressed natural gas(CNG)and liquid natural gas(LNG)systems. Following an engineering evaluation of the data, an analysis of the systems was conducted to determine if the normal occupant survivability limit of the vehicles in crash situations was adversely affected. Recommendations for improving the crashworthiness of the system were formulated after a fuel system analysis based on the test data and consideration of other crash modes to which the vehicles could be subjected.
