Interstate 66 has been a designated segment of the Interstate Highway System since 1956. The proposed section of I-66 through Fairfax and Arlingron Counties in Northern Virginia between the Capital Beltway (I-495) and the Potomac River has been under consideration since 1958. This 10-mile section of I-66 would connect two existing segments of I-66; a 35-mile section west of the Beltway and the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge across the Potomac River into the District of Columbia. The objectives of the I-66 Transportation Aleternates Study were to conduct a systematic evaluation of transportation demands within the corridor, to develop alternative transportation systems that would satisfy those demands and to assess the social, economic and environmental effects of alternative systems. Fiver different options, including a Base Case and four multi-mode transportation systems, were identified for detailed study and evaluation as potential solutions to the transportation needs of Northern Virginia. In addition to the displacement of 499 families and 40 businesses which has already occurred, the Base Case and Transit Option would displace 35 families; the Highway and Multi-Mode/New Facility Options would displace 161 families; and Suboptions 1 and 2 of the Multi-Mode/Improvements to Existing Facilities Option would displace 233 and 229 families, respectively. The greatest impact in terms of business displacement would occur as a result of Metro construction in the Base Case, which would displace 60 businesses and 462 employees. Although the taking of parkland varies among the options, any acquisition constitutes a significant impact, given
