The Royal Aircraft Establishment ion thruster long life test facility using a 1.5m diameter by 3.5m long vacuum chamber is described. The results of work indicating enhanced pumping when a titanium target is used are described and it is shown how this mechanism can be exploited to avoid the use of diffusion pumps during a prolonged test. The power supplies and data handling are also briefly described. (Author)
