This study originated with a July 1977 request from Commander, V Corps Artillery, to the Director, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, for information bearing on the following three questions: 1) Can artillery crew members withstand physical stresses involved with handling large quantities of ammunition and firing at a high rate over a prolonged period. 2) What is the psychological impact of firing at high rates for prolonged periods, and, 3) What leadership traits may be indicated as essential in accomplishing such a mission.
