The speed level on main roads can be expected to depend on a number of factors. The way in which the speed level varies is affected by variables concerning the road, the vehicle and the car owner and has been investigated through a combination of roadside interviews and speed measurements. The variables evaluated in regard to their effect on the speed level of cars are primarily the following: Purpose of the journey, covered and remaining distance, make of car, performance and age of car, width of road, age of owner and driving license, type of driving license. The greatest estimated difference in speed between different combinations of covered and remaining distance is 27.2 km/h. Speed increases by 0.7 km/h for each meter of road width.
