The influence of a predetermined tire deflection (as a function of tire load) on the life cycle operating cost of two eighteen wheel logging trucks was studied. The test conditions included operation over closed loop paved highways, unpaved washboarded secondary roads and logging trails with potholes as well as moderate to severe rock sections. The results show that a notable reduction in vehicle repair and maintenance as well as roadway damage can be achieved by operating tires at lower tire pressures (greater deflections) than the 90 PSI inflation pressure specified by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) technical representatives at the beginning of the project. Equally significant is the reduction in wear rate associated with the lower tire pressures.
