'Traffic safety' is often mistaken to indicate a narrow technical field. As the papers in the Record illustrate, traffic safety encompasses a wide range of technical and management expertise, often technically and analytically complex. In the Record the papers range from discussions of safety management, safety evaluation, safety countermeasures, and accident analysis and prediction to tort liability. The papers further illustrate the current wisdom that there are no 'silver bullets' in creating a safer highway transportation system. Many technical avenues must be explored and evaluated to most effectively bring about safer road and vehicle design and driver performance.
