An image intensifier system has been designed and fabricated to mount on a long focal length telescope that is to be used for daytime missile tracking. The image intensifier system was evaluated both in the laboratory and on the telescope at a field site. The evaluation showed the image intensifier system provided adequate light gain to allow for faster sampling rates, longer focal lengths, and higher f/number telescopes. The results of degradation to image quality consequential to providing this light gain are discussed. The field evaluation showed that the system has the capability to record data on missiles from launch to impact, 25 miles up range. (Author)
