This is the first volume of the seven volume TransNET West project Final Report on Transportation and Trade Expansion in Western North America and summarizes the salient content of the following 6 volumes: Trade and Transportation in the Western U.S. and Canada (FHWA-PL-94-009-015); Trade and Transportation between the U.S. and Mexico (FHWA-PL-94-009-016); Profiles of Western U.S. Canada Border Crossings (FHWA-PL-94-009-017); Profiles of U.S. -Mexico Border Crossings (FHWA-PL-94-009-018); Reaching Out; A Compendium of Stakeholder Views (FHWA-PL-94-009-019); Commissioned Special Reports (FHWA-PL-94-009-025). The summary report analyzes trade and traffic flows in Western North America in terms of origin and destination, transportation mode and type of commodity, and the status of border infrastructure, both physical and institutional. It presents the major policy implications of the findings and makes recommendations about future federal action.
