In the pre-BART traveler interview prepared by Appleyard and Carp, a set of items asked the respondents to rate the automobile, the bus, and what they expected BART to be like on the same 24 characteristics as a means of obtaining comparable evaluations across the three transportation modes. The purpose of this present analysis is to produce information which would provide an empirical base for decisions regarding repetition of these modal-comparison items in the data collection instrument for the bay area travel survey, fall, 1973.
