The Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem (AOCS) of the ESA Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), to be launched in 1993 is described. The typical mission characteristics are highlighted and their direct impact on the AOCS design is shown. AOCS units and architecture are reviewed. AOCS functional design is detailed (main functions in the AOCS software, AOCS modes and safeguards). The safeguard aspects driving the originality of the AOCS are outlined. Relevant simulations are shown to illustrate the design.
