This paper discusses Zambian charcoal markets using data from interviews undertaken in three cities. These data show that there are large numbers of agents engaged actively in the production, transport and distribution stages of the industry. As a result, competitive behaviour seems to prevail even though it is an informal industry. Although efficiency gains might be achieved through road improvement, the establishment of rural supply depots, and increased seasonal arbitrage, the market appears to serve urban consumers well. Government intervention is required only to improve roads and monitor future shifts in the operation of the industry. 3 figs, 5 tabs
