A summary of icebreaker resistance and propulsion data collected during the Arctic Marine Transportation Project between 1979 and 1986 is presented. Included are discussions of dedicated resistance and propulsion tests as well as trafficability test results. This information is combined with data and design techniques from the literature and is presented in the form of a 'handbook' which can be used by the designers of icebreaking ships. Principal technical areas addressed include level ice resistance, performance in irregular ice features such as pressure ridges and broken ice, and considerations for selection and design of propulsion equipment. Examples of recommended prediction techniques given.
