A shortage of usable AIM-7 missile containers existed and the refurbishment operations were not capable of providing the quantity required. Also the new procurement containers would not be available for several months. Therefore, the possibility of an interim and/or back-up container was investigated. An AIM-4D Falcon container (FSN 8140-546-3527) was modified to accommodate the guidance and control sections of the AIM-7E/E2 Sparrow missile. The modification included removal of part of the internal structure of the container and replacement of the rubberized hair cushioning material with 2.0 pound density polyethylene cushioning material.
