The report presents an initial review of the German high-speed train, the Intercity Express (ICE). The report utilizes information provided by the train operator in Germany, the German Federal Railway (DB); the train manufacturer consortium leader, Siemens AG; other members of the consortium in Germany, Krauss-Maffei, ABB, and Knorr Bremse AG; and the consortium that proposed the ICE technology for application in Texas, Texas FasTrac, Incorporated. The report describes the background leading up the development of the ICE system, the potential U.S. applications, and the technology in some detail. The document also reviews FRA regulations that may be applicable to the design of the train relative to any potential U.S. application.
