The derivation of the several forms of the linear-tangent steering program is presented. The mathematical form of these equations is shown to be totally independent of the variation of thrust acceleration with time. Insofar as position and velocity changes caused by thrust only are concerned, the linear-tangent law is the precise mathematical optimum. Its utility and advantages are explained, as well as its limitations. The derivation of the thrust-direction steering law is given, but guidance equations are not. (Author)
