Results of a direct observation study of safety belt use in Michigan conducted in June 1992 are reported. In the current survey, 16,855 occupants in 11,199 cars and light trucks were observed between June 1 and July 11, 1992. Front outboard shoulder belt use in passenger cars was 57.0% in June 1992, significantly higher than in pickup trucks (38.8%). Restraint use among all motorists observed increase from 49.2% in May 1990 to 51.5% in June 1992 (p<.20). By age group, restraint use rates were as follows in June 1992 (all standard seating positions): 69.5% among occupants age 0-3; 30.4% among occupants age 4-15; 47.6% among occupants age 16-29; 55.5% among occupants age 30-59; and 55.4% among occupants age 60 and older. Females continued to exhibit higher restraint use than males, 57.1% versus 46.7% in the current survey. As in previous surveys, restraint use varied by region of the state. Use rates for vehicles equipped with different restraint systems were calculated. Use of older, manual three-point belts was 49.7% while use of manual three-point belts in cars equipped with air bags was 61.6% (p<.10). Use of automatic three-point lap and shoulder belt systems was 72.3%. Lap belt use in motorized shoulder/manual lap belt systems was 70.5%.
