In order to establish a substantial fund of information on the handling qualities of the driver-automobile system to be used in the formulation of safety standards, a broad program of research is needed in various areas pertinent to this aspect of vehicle operation. This report describes such a program and breaks down the total requirements into separate projects in a form suitable for the definition of follow-on work. The major areas which are covered are: information requirements (for establishing the handling properties - safety relationship), driver psychophysical characteristics (for determining the influence of the driver on handling properties), vehicle response characteristics (for formulating quantitative criteria for desirable vehicle characteristics), and handling qualities (for collating the various elements on a performance basis). Specific work in each of these areas is described and estimates of time and effort and assignment of priority are made. (Author)
