Roundabouts are currently underutilized as an effective form of intersection control in the Republic of South Africa. The report compares the performance, in terms of delay and proportion of stops of roundabouts to three more popular stops. The primary conclusion of the report is that roundabout control performs more efficiently than the other control types for intersection volumes below 4,000 veh/h. This control type has a relatively low operating cost and appears to be a safe and efficient alternative to intersection control.
