A major change in the government's Pacific ship routing activity occurred during the summer of 1971. This change was the transfer of the U.S. Navy's Optimum Track Ship Routing (OTSR) service from Fleet Weather Central, Alameda, to the Fleet Numerical Weather Central (FNWC) in Monterey, CA. The transfer to FNWC Monterey, with its staff intact, provided OTSR the benefit of closer liaison with the Navy's primary center for computer-oriented meteorological support and development. While the basic ship routing service is still being ppovided, the association with civilian as well as Navy computer specialists has brought about some significant innovations to the problem of extended forecasting for ocean transits by ships.
