To improve chances of survival for emergency patients, the time from the occurrence of the emergency to the preliminary medical treatment must be as short as possible. Helicopters thus are a vital element of a complete emergency rescue service. Two-thirds of all victims of fatal traffic accidents die within 25 minutes after the accident. A survey of patients in need of prehospital resuscitation in the county of Akershus, Norway, during the past 2 years shows a badly functioning system. Since 1968, tests have been carried out as a result of an initiative taken by the German Automobile Club (ADAC). The Norwegian Automobile Club (NAF), hospitals in the Oslo area, and the Army Medical School (Lahaugmoen) have cooperated to establish a 1-year trial period for the use of an ambulance helicopter. The article includes illustrations and a bibliography. The language of this document is Norwegian.
