COS-B is a scientific satellite developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), formerly the European Space Research Organization (ESRO), to study extraterrestrial gamma radiation in the 25 MEV to 1 GEV energy range. The COS-B spacecraft is scheduled to be launched by NASA on a Delta launch vehicle from the Western Test Range at Vandenberg AFB, California, no earlier than August 7, 1975 into a highly elliptical, near-polar orbit. NASA launch support services are being provided to ESA on a fully-reimbursable basis. The spacecraft prime contractor is Messerschmitt-Boklow-Blohm (MBB) under contract to the European Space Research and Technology Centre at Noordwijk, Holland. After separation from the launch vehicle, the satellite will transmit data real-time to ground stations of the European Space Tracking Network (ESTRACK) with central control at the European Space Research Operation Centre (ESOC) at Darmstadt, Germany. The launch vehicle will be a Delta 2913 configuration which includes an Extended Long Tank Thor booster with RS-27 engine, nine strap-on Castor II motors, Delta second stage with TR-201 engine, TE-364-3 third stage motor, and eight foot payload fairing.
