Chile is a good to very good market for U.S. suppliers of Diesel/Electric locomotives and spare parts, but market growth will be uneven until 1995. The authors believe two factors account for the market's fluctuations. First, Chilean public and private firms with rolling stocks invest in an erratic way; often, for example, these firms do all their heavy repairs and major equipment purchases in one year, leaving little investment money available for the following year or two. Second, the outlook for the much-needed privatization of Chile's state railway system is uncertain. If railway privatization is approved, the authors believe it will create an excellent opportunity for U.S. firms to purchase part of EFE's cargo area. Privatization also will boost sales of locomotive equipment and spare parts to the private companies it will create.
