Digital image processing is used in analyzing video tapes recorded for traffic flow analysis. Problem-oriented data reduction and organization is used to reduce the computational load and to simplify the analysis. Vehicles are detected by looking for non-background objects with the size and behavior reasonable for a vehicle. An application example is implemented using commercially available hardware.
