The data indicate that the XV-5A aircraft is safe and airworthy. This conclusion was substantiated by analysis, ground test and flight test. The XV-5A is shown to be structurally sound and suitable for use in a flight test program of at least 250 hours. The airplane was manufactured to exacting aircraft standards in choice and use of materials, components and subsystems, and was manufactured and tested with strict quality control standards maintained. Safety and airworthiness of the XV-5A VTOL aircraft, using the lift fan concept, was demonstrated. Flight tests indicate that controllability is adequate and in agreement with acceptable standards. Control is satisfactory in VTOL and CTOL throughout the flight envelope, and during ground roll and taxi. Flutter analysis, and experimental ground, wind tunnel and flight tests indicate that the aircraft is free of flutter within the prescribed flight envelope. (Author)
